The pixel art in Now & Then does this thing where the sprites are just detailed enough to make you lean in, then the animation hits and it's like watching a flipbook made by someone who really, really studied how bodies move during a spanking. The sound design is sparse, mostly ambient groans of a dead world and the sharp crack that made me jump the first time Carol bent over Jack's knee. I spent way too long in the early scenes just clicking through dialogue trees, trying to figure out if the game was going to acknowledge how weird the power dynamic gets when your adopted daughter starts calling the shots after society collapses. It does. It absolutely does.
The femdom pivot sneaks up on you. One minute you're scavenging canned goods in a pandemic wasteland, the next Carol's got this look in her pixelated eyes and suddenly Jack's the one on his knees. There's a blowjob scene about midway through that's animated with this almost obsessive attention to the way saliva stretches, and I remember thinking, "This is the same engine that rendered a sad widower staring at family photos." The tonal whiplash is either the point or a bug, I still can't decide. The futa content arrives later, and honestly I forgot it was tagged until Carol's sprite loaded with new equipment and I choked on my drink. The spanking mechanics, if you can call them that, are basically quick-time events with a rhythm that feels intentionally off, like the game wants you to mess up.
The opening scene sets expectations by immediately lying to you. It's tender, almost Hallmark-channel stuff, Jack reading bedtime stories to a scared kid. Then the pandemic hits and the story time becomes... different. The voice acting, when it's there, has this ASMR quality that makes the explicit dialogue hit harder than it should. I wish the RPG elements mattered more. You level up, but it feels disconnected from the scenes that actually, uh, progress the relationship. Dare to play it alone, or invite company?
