Akimi just graduated and she’s in Japan, right, and the whole thing with Enako, her host and teacher, it’s that kind of messy realization that the geisha fantasy you see in movies isn’t really about the fans and silk, it’s about what happens when you’re told to let go of every button you’ve ever done up tight. The first time Enako makes her undress it’s not like a porno, it’s slower and stranger, you’re just clicking to take off your top and she watches and something in the text says your face is burning but your hands aren’t shaking. That stuck with me. Made me think about that one trip I took to Kyoto where I got scammed into a tea ceremony and the hostess stared at me like she could see every awkward thing I’d ever done.
The game uses this hint system where you literally type JAPAN to get directions, and that felt so dumb and so perfect at the same time, like a little cheat code for when you’re lost in the quest and also your own head. You’re clicking through japan streets looking for items, talking to people, trying to figure out what to do next. I mean, the gameplay isn’t the point, right? It’s the way the quests push Akimi into these moments, a brunette asian girl learning that sexuality isn’t something you learn like a dance, it’s something you trip into. Enako is a lot, she’s bossy and soft in a way that made me want to hug her and also tell her to back off, what kind of host says “you’ll learn to feel free” while she’s untying your obi? The adventure tag is doing heavy lifting here because the real journey is Akimi’s mouth going dry when she’s told to serve tea in a certain way, and the way the game lets you linger on those small humiliations is hotter than the actual explicit bits.
I wish the background art wasn’t so... placeholder sometimes, just vague blobs of temple gates, but then that lack of polish, it kind of works? A deliberate unpolish that makes you focus on the text, the way a single sentence can flip from tourist cute to something that makes you shift in your seat. The quests get repetitive, go here, fetch that, but then a scene will happen where Akimi has to look at her own reflection in a low lamp and describe what she sees, and it’s so much about queer discovery without ever saying it out loud, the way you notice another woman’s collarbone before you notice your own. I got upset about a dialogue loop that wouldn’t advance and almost quit, which is so typical of these browser games, but then I typed JAPAN and got a hint about touching silk and I was right back in it, forgetting what I was mad about.
