I keep thinking about the stealth mechanic. Not the game's stealth mechanic, Inoda's stealth mechanic. The way he just... appears. In the VRMMO, sure, that's the skill. But then he's at the cafe. Then he's in your apartment. The game never lets you forget that his character is "weakened" by this ability, this voyeur's dream of a skill, and you're supposed to feel sorry for him. You're supposed to help him level up. And Asuna, your girlfriend in both worlds, she's so eager to help. Too eager? No, that's the paranoia talking. Or is it the game talking? The turn based combat is actually pretty standard SAO fare, nothing special, but it's what happens between battles that got under my skin. You'll be grinding mobs and suddenly a scene triggers where Inoda is "accidentally" positioned just so, his camera angle catching Asuna bending over to loot a chest. That big ass the tag promised. And you can't do anything. You just watch him watch her.

The groping scenes on the train. God. They're animated in this jerky, almost embarrassed way, like the game itself knows it's wrong. Asuna's expression doesn't change at first. That's the worst part. She's just staring at her phone while his hand... and you're standing right there, supposedly her boyfriend, supposedly the protagonist, but the male protagonist tag feels like a cruel joke because you have zero agency. You're a camera with a health bar. The school setting segments are where the netorare really digs in. Inoda somehow transferred. Of course he did. And there's this one scene in the empty classroom where he convinces her to demonstrate something from the game, some "technique," and it turns into a handjob while you watch through the door window. The voyeurism tag isn't just a feature, it's the entire emotional core. You're always watching. Never intervening.

I wish the combat was harder. Not because I want a challenge, but because I want something to focus on besides the creeping dread. The monster designs are actually pretty good for a 3dcg game this unpolished. There's one boss, some tentacled thing, and the way it... actually, never mind. The milf tag confused me until Asuna's mother showed up. That's a whole other thing. The oral sex scene with her came out of nowhere and I'm still not sure if it was a dream sequence or if Inoda's corruption spreads that far. The creampie finish during the vaginal sex scene with Asuna near the end, the one where she's clearly thinking about him, her eyes doing that glazed over thing that Japanese games love, that's when I realized the cheating tag wasn't accurate. It's not cheating if she's already gone. And she was gone long before that animation played. The exhibitionism creeps in slowly. First it's just in the game world, her avatar wearing less and less. Then it's the real world, her skirt getting shorter. By the time they do it in the park, you're not even surprised. Just tired. The 2d game elements, the menu screens and dialogue boxes, they feel like they're from a different, happier game. A game where you could actually make choices.
