I keep thinking about the eyebrows. Sarena's 3D model in this parody has these perfectly sculpted brows that somehow emote more than the rest of her face combined. The AI generated bits mixed with traditional CG create this uncanny valley effect where sometimes she looks like a real person and sometimes like a melted wax figure of a Pokemon trainer, but those eyebrows. They're doing all the heavy lifting in the romance department.
The combat system caught me off guard. You're Ash, obviously, and there's this puzzle mechanic where you match symbols to land hits. I spent way too long on the first battle because I was convinced the lightning bolt icon meant Pikachu would appear. It doesn't. It never does. Pikachu is not in this game. I checked every corner, every dialogue tree, every weird dream sequence where Sarena's clothes keep glitching through her body like she's phasing between dimensions. No Pikachu. The betrayal I felt was real. Meanwhile the sex scenes trigger based on combat performance, which is fine I guess, but the puzzle difficulty spikes randomly. One minute you're breezing through, the next you're stuck on a symbol pattern that makes zero sense and Sarena's just standing there with those eyebrows raised like she's disappointed in you specifically.
The humor lands sometimes. There's a moment where Ash monologues about becoming a Pokemon master while clearly about to do something else entirely, and the self awareness made me snort. But then the game forgets it's a parody for long stretches and plays the romance straight, which creates this tonal whiplash that I can't decide if it's intentional or just sloppy. The happy ending tag is accurate at least, though the path to get there involves some choices that feel like they were written by someone who watched the anime once while scrolling Twitter. I wish the puzzle sections had any connection to actual Pokemon training instead of being abstract symbol matching, but that's never getting patched. The whole thing lingers in my head not because it's good but because it's strange, and honestly that counts for something.
