The cutscene direction in Etlina's Principle is, and I mean this with the full weight of my animation background, completely unhinged. Not in a bad way. The 3DCG models have that specific jank where the textures look like they were pulled from a 2007 era Poser forum, skin too glossy, the slime girls looking less like organic symbiotes and more like someone melted a gumball machine. But then the camera will do something genuinely clever, a slow pan across a ruined cityscape where the tentacles are just... writhing in the background, out of focus, and you realize the compositing is actually carrying the entire mood. The corruption sequences, when the Nox Limax suit starts bonding with the host, have this gross wet sound design that made me alt-tab to check if something else was playing. It's effective.

The point and click adventure bits are whatever. You're a HOWL Squad guy, male protagonist, standard military dude, walking through a dystopian hellscape where everything wants to either kill you or fuck you. The monster girl designs are where the budget clearly went. There's this one slime girl early on, her transformation isn't complete, half her face is still human and the other half is that latex-like goo, and the vaginal sex scene with her is framed like a goddamn horror movie. The symbiote tentacles don't just penetrate, they explore, and the animation loops are short but they picked the right moments to loop. The corruption isn't just visual, the dialogue gets fragmented, the text box glitches. It's a nice touch.

What kills me is the inconsistency. One scene will have this beautifully rendered transformation, the host's body distorting as the living suit takes over, graphic violence mixed with explicit sexual imagery that actually made me uncomfortable. Then the next scene is two static models clipping into each other while a text box describes what's happening. The adventure framework is just a vehicle to get you from one encounter to the next, and the "choices" about who to support feel like an afterthought. The dystopian setting is just set dressing for tentacle porn. Which, fine, that's what we're here for. But then they'll throw in a genuinely interesting lore dump about the Nox Limax organism and I'm like, wait, was this written by someone who actually cared? The monster girl who's half transformed, the one who still remembers being human, her scene has more pathos than the entire rest of the game combined. Then you fuck a slime puddle. I don't know man. The symbiote corruption scenes are the highlight, everything else is just clicking through to get to the next one.
